There are no Gypsy Districts left in Kosovo | |
Not only individual houses of the Roma/Ashkali were plundered, burned down and flattened, but whole streets, quarters, even parts of towns. 1160 homes in Pristina, 1520 in Pec, 800 in Djakovica, 700 in Obilic, 700 in Gnijlan and almost 2000 in Mitrovica. All together, about 15,000 houses had been destroyed by March 2000. Only a small part of these were hit by NATO bombs or the Serbian militia. If it were not for a few surviving enclaves, protected by the international presence that causes the UCK (KLA) to hesitate, the organisers of the pogrom could proclaim proudly that there are no gypsy districts left in Kosovo. Proclamations of this style were made by the Nazi General Stroop when he reported the destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto. But most UCK (KLA) commanders have been able to report at least the following from their respective areas: the property and many of the abandoned houses owned by Roma have now been taken over by Albanians. | Destroyed Roma quarter in Pristina Photo: T.
